What is your favourite Christmas song? Chances are you have about 50, there are just too many to choose from that evoke merry memories of champagne popping and present shopping. As much as I love to join the flurry of pre-christmas consumerism to the angelic voice of Justin Bieber's Mistletoe, there really is only one Christmas Carol(e) that I can truly shop along with...Ladies and gentlemen: My mother. Now much like any (decent) christmas song, a visit from mummy was bound to lift my spirits. So together we had all the song writing ingredients for a cracking couple of days in the great city of Edinburgh prior to the end of the semester. Spoiling ourselves rotten and most definitely avoiding all glimmers of responsibility- mother daughter style. So here is an acrostic-ally arranged summary of my merry-mother-daughter-date.... C offee...Oooh shocker, we went for coffee. Okay so not going to lie, we invested in like three but Edinburgh is so full of cute coffee shops that I have been dying to share with my like-minded cafe loving mother. Plus, shopping is tiring so caffeine is needed.
Now if you are looking for somewhere to go where the vibe is friendly enough to chill as you sip your almond milk latte (yes ALMOND MILK!). Yet want somewhere that has enough class to justify putting a leather sofa in the bathrooms so you can play out your dream of having your own reality TV show, then Burr & Co. is your Burr & calling.
Not your regular army of fine liquidised cocoa beans this time- nuh uh! A festive army of GINGERBREADMEN had marched it's way into the hot chocolate for a winter special, with gingerbread chocolate cream and gingerbread chocolate sprinkles grated atop like festively spiced snow- how could anyone say no? A ctivitiesDon't worry, as the tour guide/activity coordinator I did manage to show off more than just the inside of Edinburgh's cafes. Edinburgh's Christmas market is entirely braggable and will force even the most Bah of Humbugs to sing along to the jolly music. Crepes, crafts and questionably safe carnival rides galore- it's a real treat to just wander and explore. Or if you feel like making some purchases, it's great at reducing the weight of your purse. After a long hard time of Ed-xploring, and a good few weeks of mother deprived Jasmine, it was time to reveal the surprise I had planned. Tickets for motherkins and I to see the Scottish Ballet's Cinderella at Edinburgh's Festival theatre! I've been to a few ballet shows before, but bippidy-boppidy-boo this one was the best ballet I've seen. I just wanted to join the magic happening on stage. A fantastically high standard of dance, beautiful costumes and scenery, humour, elegance, and not to mention it was a show I adored in the company of my best friend, my mother. I will never forget this precious evening. R elaxationPLEASE tell me you've had the pleasure of staying at Premier Inn. I know, I know it's just another corporate chain of predictable 'business model' beds in a building. But it is that precise purple predictability that keeps Premier Inn our go to hotel nationwide. Especially considering past Edinburgh B&B experiences. We spent our spare evening time there, with a guaranteed good nights sleep, a bountiful breakfast buffet and a consistently comfortable crib- what more could you want? ...Just don't make the mistake of asking the guy at the desk about his first aid badge....unless you want him to recite the entire list of his health and safety training qualifications. O utfitsCringe all you like at the cheesy mother-daughter mirror selfie. I have no shame. We have spent the past 20 years perfecting our shopping chemistry. It is both a sport, an art and a therapy more effective at boosting a mood than anything Freud could conjure up. So, you bet your bottom dollar we shopped. Shopping does not need a purpose, it does not need a purchase. All shopping needs is a perfect person, and some perfectly indulgent fantasy fashion shows. So shopping, sipping and sleeping aside there was one more thing that was, for my mum's visit, the cherry on the haggis. Completing the Christmas Carol is Edinburgh's Christmas... L ightsThe magical Jenner's Christmas tree twinkling 3 stories high, The 'Street of Light' which lights up Edinburgh's Royal Mile with a festive luminosity that cannot be missed. And I couldn't have spent my pre-Christmas preparations with a better Christmas Carole than my mother.
So If you're looking for somewhere to light your Christmas candle flame of festivities, Edinburgh may just be your best match.
